How do it know? The magic in the ECM program I figure. Probably a combinatiom of RPM, speed, and the switch in the tranny.

The 6th gear light is based on RPM's or something like that so it changes it up

After 35yrs of ridding motorcycles, drag cars, and shooting guns my hearing is about gone.
I don't hear the 5th gear whine that everyone is talking about. I have to count on the feel of bike to let me know what is going on. And that explains why I wind up in 6th gear a lot.
So as you can see, I am try to overcome a handicap with my bad hearing. I just thought a 5th gear light would help me out.

I suspect it is related to two things. Ecm is set to recognize sixth with a minumum speed from the speedometer and a range of rpms the engine should be turning related to speeds, once the switch is triggered in the tranny. If you by going to a 30 tooth the rpm/speed area is out of sync, by about 500 rpm, so the ecm says fu and won't light it up.

+1 on watching the RPM's expect on mine I try to keep it above 2500. Anything lower and it lugs

I usually change my gears about a 3000 rpm 5 to 6 then it drops down to about 2200 rpm or so.
