Test Rode a Couple
I have been thinking about a touring bike for a while now and was considering a Street Glide and an EG Standard. Well yesterday I took a ride to a dealer about an hour away and took a 2009 EG Standard with 10 miles on it for a test ride since he had no SG's available. I was mainly interested to see how an FLH would do on the interstate since this is the one place I think the Dyna could do a little better. I did about 20 miles down the interstate. The bike ran effortessly at 80 mph. 70 mph felt really slow and I loved the cruise. However the bike did not knock my socks off other than the way it ran down the highway. I did notice the gear wine in fifth gear too.
I then took a ride over to another dealer that had HD there giving demo rides. I signed up for a Street Glide with about 2500 miles on it. We went on a 20 mile ride down some nice two lane backroads. I'm not sure what the real difference was but the SG did knock my socks off. It felt much more nimble than the EG Std and I did like the shorter windscreen although I think I'd opt for a taller one for any long interstate rides. The bike seemed to run stronger too but I'm guessing this is because the bike had more miles on it. I did notice that this bike also had the fifth gear wine. I loved the brembo brakes. They are soooo much better than the brakes on my FXDI.
The one dealer offered me a SG at MSRP plus setup and is going to give me $8500 for my 2005 FXDI with 43,000 miles which I think is a really fair deal. He also said I could take the Corbin and Boss Bags off the bike. I figure I can get $200-300 for each on ebay which would take care of a set of slip on's open air cleaner and a PCIII.
My FXDI does everything pretty well and I know that there really is no logical reason to get a SG. However after riding the SG I really want this bike. I think it is a really sharp looking bike and I love all the chrome and the blacked out motor, the Brembos/ABS, Six Speed and the stereo.
The payment on my FXDI is about $200 a month and I owe about $4000. I can pick up an 09 SG with ABS, Cruise in Black Pearl for my FXDI plus about $3000 and my payments would be about $250 for 74 months.
Decision, decisions!
I know exactly what you're feeling on wanting a touring bike. I like my Dyna for around town, but I really want to move up to a road king. I say if you want the new bike, go for it...but seriously... 74 Months?....DAMN!!!
I don't know your situration, but I can't imagine financing anything for 74 months. I would scrape, beg, plead and borrow a couple thousand more and just try to finance the thing for 60 mo. at most.
Either way, good luck on your purchase.
Ben
With nothing down on the bike your payment would go up maybe $50? So, now your payment is 300.
Put the 6K in a new bank account, place $50 a month in that account and you will have your payment made for 2 years!...no worries. Everytime you have a little bonus cash, put it in there.
If you put $135 in there a month you would have your payment made for 3 yrs!!
Do the math this way for your actual amounts.... you will be surprised!

As I mentioned the hardest thing for me is trying to rationalize spending $20k on a motorcycle no matter how nice it is!
Good luck!
