My last five or so HD's all had them bolted on. What year did they start riveting one side? Guess that tells you how up to speed I am. Also one of the first things to go. Although the whole seat went with it out the door on day 1.
Mine has bolts, but I wish they had some sort of quick-detach clip because it's a pain as the bolt also is the front saddle-bag bracket and when you need to get the seat off, you end up losening the saddlebag bracket. It either should be it's own bolt or a quick detach.
Taking the strap completely off leaves the slots in the stock seat which doesn't look right. What I did was hook the ends of the seat strap over the bolts under the seat coming out of the fender...the strap is on, not bolted, but hangs onto the fender bolts. I wouldn't want a passenger (which is always the wife) to use it to hold onto, but it looks fine solo.

You would think HD would have screwed both sides down with phillips head screws. NO, they have to rivet one side to cause us extra work.....
Guess I could drill out the rivet if need be but my luck, I would nick the paint job somehow.
