Oil is the cheapest thing that you can put into your engine/trans. Yes, mileage is important, but if you have many idle weeks/months that can be a catalyst for changing also (moisture). This is not an area to scrimp....but on the other hand don't let it worry you. Have fun working on your ride! I do enjoy some of my "bike projects" as much as riding. Remember, I said "some".
I run synthetic in all 3 holes. 2500 oil and filter. 5000 primary and trans. The wrench at the HD shop told me that Mobil 1 makes the Harley Synthetic oil.
I stick to a 3k routine. I live in South Fl, where it gets funky hot in the summer. I did an oil change mid summer, due to idling in the extreme heat. ( I ops checked the EFI heat management a couple of times)
On my RK I just got (bought it used with 3900 miles) I rode it home(230 Miles) I switched out the fluids.
I run Mobil 1 V twin 20-50 in the engine
Mobil 1 75-90 gear lube in the tranny
HD primary in the primary
I use Amsoil 20w50 in the engine and primary, 75w90 in the tranny. I change mine every 2500 miles. All three. After spending 20k+$ on a bike.....why save a penny or two now? It's easy, it only takes about an hour, and I get to look at everything BEFORE I have a huge problem. At 2500 miles, the engine and primary oil looks pretty dirty....the tranny looks the same as the day I poured it in.....
I have SYN-3 in all holes right now, but I wonder if the other brands are that much better than the recomended SYN-3. I have two cases of Mobil1 V-Twin 20-50 that I use in my boat engines, what do you guys think about that oil over the SYN-3.

Why not drop down into the tech section, hit the oil stuff, and see?
Syn3 every 3K miles...sleep better at night. Oil is cheap, and changing it allows me more time to commune with my steel baby. I like to keep her freshly oiled and ride the schitt out of her...she likes it too!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do the crankcase oil more often (2500) because I ride in the city a good bit. 2 or 3 days a week I ride to work and coming home I almost always come down Peachtree st. all the way through Atlanta. And sometimes on the way to work as well, if I have time.
