For those of you who are running full synthetics, how often are you changing out your fluids? I am running Amsoil MCV 20-50 in all holes. I've been doing the crankcase every 2000 and tranny and primary every 4000. Is this overkill?
I don't know about anyone else but I don't use the Amsoil 20-50 in the tranny or the primary, was told it was too thin for the transmission. All the research I've done confirms the opinion enough for me. But to answer your question specifically, I change mine every 5 to 7K depending on the type of riding I do. If it's all around town, then every 5k, longer trips, every 7K.
I dont think it is overkill. If you consider the things you are helping to preserve by frequent oil changes, I say go for it. Cant hurt it, costs a little more, but it doesent seem like much when you look at how much you have invested in the whole bike.
Older bikes required frequent oil changes. Recent Twin Cams go for 5,000. Certainly doesn't hurt to do it more frequently but I wouldn't do it unless I was operating the bike under really extreme conditions such as idling a lot in hot weather or pulling a camping trailer.

Yea, what he said.... espically w/ Synthetic oil. You might consider the AMSoil 75/90 in the gear case though....???...
I use SYN 3 in everything and HD claims you should get 5000 between oil changes and 10,000 in primary and trans. I just do everything every 5000, I agree it is easier to remember, 5,10,15,etc.

I like to do mine every 3k ... but sometime it works out to be 5k miles ... I use Mobil 1 VTwin 20-50 and the 75-90 Mobil 1 Gear Oil in the tranny ... HOWEVER, somewhere in these here posts (and a mag article I read), states that the 20-50 is essentially the same weight as the 75-90 gear oil (they are measured differently, gear oil vs motor oil) ... the main difference is the ingredients used. That's why I use the 75-90 tranny gear oil.
It is a little bit of overkill to do the motor every 2K but it certainly won't hurt anything...except your pocket book.
I use AMSOIL also and on a brand new bike I change to full synthetic at the 1K service and then I drain the crankcase again after another 2K. After that I go to 5K between changes.
