Question Overheating and vibration

My 2006 RK started to overheat in a traffic jam in Florida. As it is supposed to do, the idle speed started to reduce, then it stopped firing on some of the strokes, again as it is supposed to do. After I starting running at speed again, I notice the engine was vibrating much more than before the heat event. I have a new front motor mount but took it apart to make sure it was OK. Question...could this heat thing have bent something in the motor. I've heard the terms slipped flywheels, scissored cranks. I don't know those terms but wanted to check with you guys.

I don't think the EITMS was available on the 06's. I thought it was an 08 or 09 sort of feature.

If it is running well now then it is nothing to worry about. The overheat was the cause of the temporary vibration. The motor would sieze before heat would cause any of the symptoms you listed would happen. What may have caused the vibration is the engine was still in it's overheat mode when you were running "at speed"; takes time to cool back down. Unfortunately, HD's shutdown the injectors when overheating and not the ignition, which would help cool the overheated engine!

On the 07's too, but you have to the dealer turn it on, or if you have the SERT you can turn it on yourself.

The heat mode only happens when the engine is at idle if the engine gets too hot. As soon as you take off, both cylinders are firing again. On my 08 I can turn the heat mode on or off by rolling the throttle back and holding it until the cruise light blinks. The dealer had to activate the feature first, then I could turn it on or off.

The bike definately has the heat management system, it shocked me when it happened, then I looked it up. I probably wasn't clear but the vibration started after the bike cooled down but the vibration is still there. That's why I wondered if I hurt something in the motor.

The Parade mode is the one set on/off at dealer upon request; otherwise it's heat management.

Parade mode/heat management? I believe you're talking about the same thing, just using 2 different titles. The dealer simply activates the feature. Once they activate the feature, you have the option to turn it on or off. Once it's activated by the dealer, you simply turn the ignition on (engine can be running or off), roll the throttle back and hold it until the cruise control light comes on. It will light green when you turn it on, or orange when you turn it off. When the feature is on, it simply stops firing the injector on the rear cylinder if the engine gets too hot. It only does this when you are setting still and idling. Once you take off, it starts firing the injector again. If you aren't paying close attention, you might not even notice when this happens. The idle changes very slightly. The idea behind this is that the cylinder becomes an air pump pumping cool air through the cylinder thus cooling it down. Because the injector is not firing, there is no combustion, however, the cylinder is still pulling air through. Hope this clearifies the operation of parade mode.

Actually, they are not the same. One is a heat management system that is on TC88's prior to the '07 touring models. The other is the new Engine Idle Temperature Management System on late model '08's and the new '09's.

The heat management is a three phase system that 1) reduces idle speed, 2) enrichens the A/F ratio and 3) fuel injector pulses are interrupted.

There are similarities between the two but they are different systems. One is also rider controlled where the earlier heat management system is not.

This from the owner's manual of a 2006 Dyna:

Thanks for the clarification AZ Rider. My bike is the 08 with the new version. Didn't pickup the fact that his was the older version.
