Default While I'm in there....

I'm swapping out my 05 EGS Rocker Boxes and Covers for chrome. While I'm in there what else should I take advantage of doing? I'm planning on a more aggressive gear driven cam over the winter. Not looking to do top end yet.

Should I go with Roller Rockers now?
Adjustable push Rods?
Doherty Mystfree?

Ideas or suggestions??

thx guys

I don't think that the twin cams need rolling rockers like the evos do because the pushrod angle is less. I have them in my 89 but have not even considered on my 06.

Since you are going to have the rocker box off, I would stick with the solid pushrods, the only advantage the adjustible have is that you don't have to take the rocker boxes apart when doing cam chest work.

Upgrading the oil breather valve assembly would be a good thing, especially if you have future upgrades planned. Just my 2 cents.

Also drill out the rocker supports with a #43 bit like Doherty system does.

While I has it apart, I'd shim between the rocker lever and the box. To eliminate all but about .003/.004 clearance. I found mine to be sliding along the length of the rocker shaft and causing a pecking noise like a pushrod was loose. I made mine with SS Shimstock and a punch set I bought from McMaster-Carr. Just a thought.

It improves the oil return by enlarging the holes ever so slightly. Easy to do, just take your support and use a #43 bit and drill the hole larger. I have a pic from the Doherty setup, but it's on my home computer.

I'm sure the chrome will look better than the polished covers, but I'd wait until you decide what cams you plan to use since you may be in there again replacing the springs depending on how "aggressive" a cam you ultimately select. Or ask the prospective cam suppliers whether the stock springs will be good for the cams you are considering and, if new springs are recommended, install them now. You can also ask them if they recommend the "aggressive" cams you are considering with stock heads (assuming yours are and will remain so). It's easy to over-cam an engine with a high lift cam with stock heads.

Since your bike is an '05, you should check (if you haven't already) whether your bike has the valve seals HD originally used in production that needed to be replaced because they didn't seal properly. IIRC, there is a color difference in the original, defective version, and the replacement seals that solved the problem (oil leakage past the seal).

Ditto no need for roller rockers unless you are doing headwork and very high lift cams, such as lift of more than .575".

Good luck with your project.
