When you guys have to push your bikes or pull them back, can you put the same amount of force on Apes as you can with bars that are lower and have more leverage?

I have run apes for years now and have found a trick out to prevent the bars from moving. I always pin the bars to the risers. I have done both a roll pin and a set screw. Without those then the bars do tend to move and loosen when you push them hard. But with them I have had no problems at all and have done some wheelies with them and also drag racing without them moving at all and no breakage in the roll pins.

Those are 16's on my 02 RK. I'm 5'11" and they look and feel great. Your a bit shorter and I understand your concern with the law - no point having a great looking bike your afraid to ride because of cops. the best advice I've seen here and it goes for anything is try before you buy. it's the only definite way to know what to get for YOU. with that being said, my opinion on apes is this. you getting apes because you love that look. well, then get the highest bars you can handle which at your height is 16's. anything less will work but remember this - you getting apes for the look, and the lower they are, the less they look like apes.

I started off short and they're to short.

Kinda, roll the dice and take your chances but your height I'd think the 12.5 be a good choice.

Buy the 16's for a Road King. Im 6'1" and i have 18's on my softail, with a lepera bare bones seat. 18's on a softail are like 20's on a road king because of the seat height difference. i had 16's on my Eglide, they were great too. Very drivable, and i had a very low profile seat on it too. As for pulling them back, keep in mind that most apes have at least 7" of pull back in them. you do not want ape hangers too close to you, I have to run slightly leaning forward or my back kills me. The nice thing about apes is the adjustability you will have forward and backward. I loosten mine up and pull them back on long trips so i can lean on a t-bag, then i take my little allen wrench out and loosten up the clamps and push them back where they belong when i get there. After i rode for the first time with apes, i knew i'd never have anything else. My advise would be to set on somebodys bike with apes and see what you think. in my opinion, im most comfortable with my arms stretched out when my back is vertical. Also, we can custom make you a set of wider bars for a King if you are interested, please contact me through ebay if you are interested.
