Angry Trigger Happy Sherriff

Just got back from a nice long week trip through Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. On the way home, I got nailed by this trigger happy Sheriff in Dayton, Washington. Just a little speed trap outside of town about two miles. Nailed me with the gun doing 52 in a 35. Penalty = $192.00!! Just returned home and called the court, talked to a very nice lady that kind of laughed and said they get a lot of out of towners. Suggested I write a letter to the judge with a copy of my driving record (no citations for quite a few years), and she'd see what she could do. Anybody get caught out there in one of these little traps? Guess that's how they pay for their h.s. football team uniforms.

Were you doing 17 over? If so, take your medicine.

Trigger happy Sheriff or a throttle-happy rider?

As a cop, I've never written a ticket the driver didn't deserve. Most people feel they don't deserve a ticket. Speed limits are usually clearly posted. As a driver, you make the choice whether or not to follow them or ignore them. Choose to ignore the limit, then take your punishment when you're caught. Areas were "speed traps" are conducted are generally areas that there are a lot of car wrecks or a lot of citizen complaints. Speed kills.

My neighbor and good friend is a Snohomish County sherriff in Washington. SOP for write-ups is 15 over. These guys are human and are basically looking for the flagrant idiots. So I stick with a strict 10 over rule and never have a problem.

I ride a lot of back roads in Washington State. Every small town has speed zones going into and out of town. Sometimes these zones extend past the town for quite a distance. I always watch myself in these zones. Of course, you know the local police are going to watch these areas. Are they traps? I guess you could call them that. It's their town and they make the rules.

It's an expensive lesson, isn't it?

Should have mentioned that school and construction zones are a different story. Stick with the post.

Got lost in my Avalanche, looking up at the street sign ( the one that was supposed to face me was missing) so I went through a stop light, cop pulls me over gives me a ticket and explains how to get out of paying by taking a class. Very pleasant experience considering the circumstances. Yep they are just doing their job, I have (had) a very clean record.

Inside the city of Atlanta, the speed limit on the highway is 55. I don't typically write the speeder unless they are 80+mph. That's 25 over. I've written for less though... depending on my mood. 70mph is typical. There's no hard and fast rule. All city streets are 35 unless posted at which point I draw the line at 50+mph. That's still 15 over. Don't be mad at the cop. We have a job to do just like anybody else.
