I have an 08 electra glide that just recieved it's 1000 mile service. Amsoil in all three holes. Tranny has the same noise level as before with no noticible shifting improvement.

Saw on the dealership floor the other day two CVO models and noticed a factory sticker on the primary cover that says all three holes factory filled with synthetics. Don't know if its the same synthetic in all three, but just the same. I didn't think Synthetic was good for breaking in an engine.

I do not think that would be a good idea.I would think that the rings would need to seat and other things.

Putting the same engine oil in a tranny sounds to me weird.

If this is your first Harley, what did you ride before? Most Jap bikes have one hole for everything--the same oil is lubricating the engine, clutch, and tranny. Did you think that was wierd? At least the Harley separates the primary and tranny oil from the engine oil.

Shesh, I thought it was weird too. Never owned a jap bike, the Road King is my first. You don't do it to cars, so it takes a little change of thinking for Harleys. We all live and learn. Same thing goes with the primary, there are a thousand opinions on that oil as well.

LOL, Beary, your comparison to cars reminds me of a middle aged student we had in MSF instructor prep class, who could not understand the ratcheting mechanism of a motorcycle's shifter. Because the position of his car's gear shift lever changed with each gear, he refused to believe that was not also true with cycles, and was constantly looking down at his shift lever to see what gear he was in. Halfway through the class all 12 of us instructor students were convinced he was a ringer put in the class so our instructors could see how each one of us would handle a problem student.

He didn't pass the course.

+1 on that for me. After break-in, went to Amsoil 20/50 for all 3, much quieter shifting, & a cooler running engine.

What do you or HD consider proper break in period before switching over to full Syn thetics? Will Amsoil 20/50 meet warranty for a new bike?

Thanks guys for the help.

Visc. for SAE 50 is 16.3-21.9. (20W50)
Visc. for SAE 90 is 13.5-24.0. (75W90)

This is why it is OK to use the same oil in all 3 holes.
