I am getting closer to purchasing my next bike which will probably be one of the touring models. There is some rumors going around that for 2007, HD may expand the bikes that it offers with 6-speed transmissions. If this is done with the touring models, would I be better off getting a 2006 with a 5-speed transmission now, or waiting till the 2007 models come out later in the year? Are there any great advantages to the extra gear on the touring models?
Actually I don't think it will make that much of a difference. If your running 70-80 mph bike will run a little smoother with the 6 speed transmission. I think the six is overrated but I want mine having one. IHMO
IMHO I believe that running less than 65 mph, in fifth, makes it feel like the bike is lugging. I too, prior to my recent purchase, thought I might wait for the six speed. Now, I feel it is unnecessary, at least for my type of riding. Like someone mentioned in my previous post....Buy Now, Ride Now.
Would be cool to have a 6 speed come stock on a new bagger. NOT something I would spend to do a conversion on......unless money didn't matter! Rather do a big bore with the dough.
I had the six speed put in my RKC. I really like it but it will never pay for itself. Cost too much with little return in mpg but damn I like running 80-85 getting 43mpg and the motor does not sound like it is coming apart!!!!
The 5 speed tranny is a PROVEN Transmission. It has YEARS of service. I have not riden a 6 speed, therefore I cannot make a judgement on it, however I do have a 5 speed in my EG classic and I am very satisified with it. I have to hit around 60 to hit 5th gear. It seems at its best at 65 to 80 and this speed range takes care of 95% of my riding. So, if a 6th had to get over 75 mph, it would do me very little good.....hdman
When going through the gears, I sometimes find myself thinking I need to shift up again and find myself already in 5th. It does sound like it could use another gear at times. But, I think the 5 runs real well when cruising at 80-85mph. It can still take off and engine braking is still very apparent. I would be disappointed if it would "lug" in a 6th gear at the same speeds. I guess you don't really know unless you have driven one. I may do that on some demo day at HD.
