Default Leaky valve guides

Just got my 05 EGlide back after the 10K service. I have a bad valve guide as evidenced by a very fouled plug. Luckily I have the extended warranty. Why would a bike with 10K miles experience this problem? Anyone else had this problem? The dealer recommends new rings and honing the cylinders which is not covered by warranty. I agree with this recommendation. Any other suggestions while my motor is torn apart?

Thanks in advance.

05 had a valve guide seal problem. Harley replaced the seals at no charge. There was a service bulletin, sorry can't get to a number where I am.

Mine were replaced at 11,000 but that was on the 2 year warranty. Did rings at the same time all covered under warranty. Did not cost me anything.

If I had the money would have upgraded to 95ci at the time with Harley paying the labor.

Your should be covered under the extended warranty.

You most likely do NOT need new rings and the cylinder work. There was a problem in the installation of valve guide seals in some 2005 and early 2006 models. I have a 2005 that used a quart of oil in 1500 miles all of it going through the rear cylinder. My rear plug would be carboned up to the point of almost being fouled and the front plug was clean. At that time the dealer I was dealing with said Harley wouldn't cover. I had rear valve guide seals installed in the rear cylinder ONLY and that solved my problem. Went to an Indy, cost me $243.00. No more oil useage. Since that time I have noticed on the forum that several people have problem fixed at the dealer at no cost. You said a fouled plug. The rear which was the one most often affected. But you could have a problem only on the front or both cylinders.

Can someone tell me the bulletin number or where I can locate it. I've searched the internet with no luck. This job is going to cost me about $150, ($50 extended-warranty deductable plus $100 for rings and honing the cylinders). Perhaps the dealer should be doing this job at no cost to me.

On the link above you may have to type it in. When I click on it it is screw up. In the three spaces in the like that is an underscore. (_) Hope this helps.
