Smile Windshield advise

Hello to everyone,
As a newbie to the Harley ranks, I need a little help. I have a new street glide scheduled to arrive this week-end and the weather is beginning to get coolish. My 70 year old body is rebelling so what windshield do you recommend for maximum protection, especially wind noise? Looks is secondary at this time. I have followed this forum for some time and am impressed with the body of knowledge out there. Many thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum from the coast of Washington State. Congrats on the new scooter and I hope to be ride'n still when I'm 70! One tough hombre you be! I've got the stock windhield that came with my UC but that's whole different beast with the fairing and all. I admit it, you're tougher than me!!!!

not that I have ANY KNOWLEDGE,,, go with one that's at least 3 inches taller than your straight forward line of sight, unless you like the low-profile looks of some like the "Flare" from Klock Werks.

Thanks to you guys for the nice words and advise. To the Washington State man, I just returned from your neck of the woods and it was getting cold there (Idaho) too. I was elk hunting with my old friend from the army days back in the 60's. A tough business, that. Seems the bad winter last year and the wolf population have kindqa depleted the elk. Thanks again. Hugh

Welcome to HDF's. And congrats on the new SG.

Take a look at these shields from Clark's Custom Windshields. They are extra wide and block more wind than the average windshield. This thread has a lot of info on these windshields.

Check e-bay. You can find lots of replacement windshield around $35 with various heigths. The 3 mounting holes are the same for Street Glide, Eletra Glide and Ultra. I have 3 different sizes to change to for different times of the year or travel needs.

I just put the Klock Werks "Flare" windshield on my bike and I love it. The wind and turbulence is cut way down, but the biggest difference I noticed is the stability at speed. Well worth the money IMO.

+1 on the Clarks custom windshields. I replaced the stock windshield on my 09 Ultra first thing. the stock one is 12 inches and I do not like to look into the shield so I ordered a 9" from them. It is wider than a stock shield so keeps your hands a bit warmer and you can hear the radio alot better. My lovely lady on the back says that it feels alot better for her also--if she is happy then my life is alot easier! In short, I like my shields to be about nose level, then I am looking over them normal riding but can crouch down out of the rain or snow and be protected. Welcome to the forum and i wish you many more years in the saddle my friend!

Greetings Hugh;

I'm riding an '09 Street Glide myself. That 4-inch "windshield" that came on the motorcycle looked cool, but the buffeting almost beat me to death. I did the research, and ordered a windshield and a set of lowers from Clark:
http://www.customflhtwindshields.net/egwindshield1.htm

Once installed, the motorcycle immediately became an absolute joy to ride.

I'm 5' 11', and ordered the 10-inch tall screen. At that height, I'm still looking over the windshield. That height, with the addition of the lowers, gives me a comfortable pocket to sit in. On their site, they give you instructions on what height might be appropriate for you.

You will have to think about tint, too. I went with the "light smoke" tint. The optical clarity is amazing to look through. I would not be afraid of getting a windshield tall enough to look "through" with this tint.

On top of the quality of the products, Robin and Pat (owners of the company) are some of the nicest people you'll ever have the good fortune to do business with.

Hope this helps you out!

Bryon
