It ain't all that difficult. Install the appropriate docking hardware and get the SOLO DETACHABLE Tour Pak Rack. Install, ride.... Your parts counter guy at the dealer can help you with this one. Pretty simple. The BIG BOOK has all the parts, prices, and pictures.

Why not just get a drivers backrest? It won't look as ugly as the tour pac moved forward with a big gap at the back of the bike.

Actually it looks pretty cool. If you never have a passenger, it's a great way to go, and to travel...

if you get the solo tourpak rack, look into getting the george anderson relocation bracket as well. gives you a little more adjustability. when i first did it, the hd rack, even in the rearward position, put the backrest too far forward. georges kit allowed me to put the tourpak where it was most comfortable.

I ride almost exclusively solo so I bought the solo rack to mount my detachable tour pack on. It uses the docking hardware for a sissy bar which I already had but it does require a new rack. It's a simple switch to change the rack removing about 5 screws though it does take a more time than you want to use doing it frequently. I like the look and it handles slightly better because the pack weight is directly over the rear tire. My mustang backrest fits nicely inside the padding of the pack which made it feel like I was riding in a recliner. The thing I don't like is that it's more difficult to get on and off because I have to swing my leg so high. So I switched back to the 2 up rack when I need the tour pack as around town and day trips I leave the tour pack home. Click the pic below to see the how it looks if you haven't seen it yet. Hope this helps.
