Hi Guys, I have a question concerning replacement of my stock mufflers with a new set of slipons. I purchased and received everything I need except for the Muffler clamps. Some of the placesI frequent say they have to be changed, some say the original clamps can be re-used.
Personally, I would think that they could be re-used provided they are inspected and not found to be cracked or damaged in another way.
Thanks Guys, I was hoping to try and use the old clamps to save me a 40 mile round trip to the dealer. I guess I may just bite the bullet and get the new clamps before I begin to keep from having to replace the clamps later.
I put on V&H slip-ons. They came with clamps, but the OEM clamps seemed a little beefier than the ones that came with the slip-ons. I used the HD ones, with no problems. I would use the original ones, you can always replace them in about 10 mins. in the future if you have problems.
The Torca clamps you get from H-D are the best to use. The issue with re-using them is that they have a lead lug that deforms once used. This makes them not quite as effective when re-using them on new pipes that might have slight differences in OD. I purchased new clamps when I installed my exhaust since it was a pretty cheap investment!

As you can see, using the old Torca clamps are hit or miss. The clamps that came with my V&H ovals where junk, as shown in the pic below. Note the clamp distortion and the exhaust leak!

I wasn't sure with that hour glass peace was called (lead lug). It appears to lock into place after it's first use. I can see just rotating the clamp to a different position on the pipe could cause a leak. For less than $15 I'd replace them.
