Iclick, I'm with you pretty close. If there is an easy fix/fortification for the horizontals, I couldn't see it. Haven't had a horizontal fail yet, and will just buy a new one when it does. I've fixed one vertical and fortified the other, pretty much the same way you did.

After seeing the SS horizontal brackets on the HTT site I was ready to buy them at first, but I'm not so sure now. The stock brackets are cheap ($10 each) and easy to replace, so I may just stick with them. At two years and 23k miles I've had one break, so I think if they don't break any more often than that it isn't a big deal.
The verticals are another matter. They are expensive and not easy to replace, but are repairable. I'm thinking the repair and fortification I made yesterday will last, and if not I'll repair it again, as I can't see it breaking anywhere else except at the top.
FWIW, the guy (2003flht) on HTT has made-up three more, two of them already called for, one being for me. You must register with HTT before being able to see and access the Swap Meet sections.

Eighteen months have passed since I did this write-up and things have changed. HD has redesigned the brackets and the new ones look more robust. Time will tell if they will hold up. I think if the large vertical brackets break you should fix them as per the above method, as this has held-up well for me so far. Also, the new replacements are ~$60 and a PITA to replace.
OTOH I would just replace the small horizontals with the new HD part. Time will tell if any of these will hold up, but I would guess they will.
Recently replaced both vertical brackets when changing inner fairing & gauges. Like iclick said...NOT cheap@ $45.00 a peice! but, the new ones are better reinforced at the mount tab than the original's in my 07 were.
Just read iclicks last post....Got mine about 2 weeks ago @ Los Angeles HD $45.00 each!
