Run over 6,000 miles on a change and it is a full as when I first changed it, so no oil gets used in my 2007 Road Glide. Engines shouldn't "use" any oil really.
Make sure the oil level is only half way up the stick when cold, on the side stand.
It will blow it out when hot if overfilled, even a little.
It takes the oil a while to reach the 230 degree mark with a lot of hard hot riding. Thats when you can check it (hopefully withour burning your hands) If it is close to full it's OK.
The easiest is the cold method.
After I figured the level thing out, it now only uses a few ounces of oil between 5,000 miles changes. I use Amsoil 20W50 motorcycle all year round in all three holes, on both my Ultras.
