Got out for a nice 90 mile ride today, on the way home had to stop for gas. Tank was on "E" and gauge said I had 35 miles to empty. Question is it only took 4.8 gallons until it was full about to the filler neck and the gauge read "Full". I thought the 09's had a 6 gallon tank?
Mine works about the same. Gauge just above empty, light comes on and the trip meter changes over to the count down with 1 gallon in the tank. You were getting 35 mpg on that tank so to starts counting at 35 miles to empty.
Did you fill it on its jiffy stand or holding it straight up. I have noticed when my light comes on. If I fill up while the bike is on the jiffy stand it will take about 5 gallons. If I fill it up while sitting on the bike and holding it strait up (I know not very brite but sometimes I'm in a hurry) it will only take about 4 to 4.5 gallons. Thats just what I have noticed.
Empty on the new Harleys isn't bone dry. Empty is about 1/2 gallon left in the tank. The fuel pump is in the tank and about the worst thing you could do to your fuel pump is run it dry. Harley is just saving us some down time for repairs.
When your bike goes into the countdown mode it will get all the way down and then it will flash the letters "LO" and even at that point you have a little bit. I got to that point 1 time while on my trip to Milwaukee and don't really want to get there again. Not fond of pushing these heavy beast and pouring gas from a gatorade bottle usually results in a big mess !!!
