My renewal came in handy when my wife came home and almost saw my cold sweating beer on her coffee table without a coaster. I grabbed the mail (HOG renewal was the only piece that day) and slid it under the beer before she saw my known household infraction. I have been warned. It soaked up the ring of water and i was able to pitch it in the trash before my wife came out of the bathroom. My HOG renewal letter saved my life (or maybe just salvaged the rest of my day). Thanks HOG.
I renewed every year for 8 years, then decided that the HOG magazine wasn't worth it,never even thought about joining the local chapter and had a drawer full of pins, badges, etc.I took the money and subscribed to 3 good bike mags and get a lot more enjoyment than being a HOG member.
I think it all depends on the local Chapter as to how much fun it is. The first one I belonged to was not my style at all. Seemed like all their rides were too furious and fast with very little enjoyment for the large group of riders and they had no other activities. The one I belong to now is just the opposite. Fun rides, small 6 - 10 bike groups, well organized and safety is regarded very highly. Also, we have picnics, cookouts, toys for kids at Christmas, several door prizes at meetings, dealer discounts, and the list goes on and on. The only real advantage I see with the national HOG is that you have to belong to it in order to join a local chapter.
Rapz mentioned "no response" to towing calls. Since this is the main reason I renewed, I'd like to hear of others' experience with HOG's towing assistance - good/bad -worth while?
I agree on the local chapter angle. My wife and I keep ours renewed because we have a pretty active local chapter and some good people so we participate periodically. If it was not for that, I am not sure that I would stay a member.

+1
The local dealer is 70 miles away and I am not into big group rides so, local club isn't of interest. Do a lot of traveling though and have AAA but would toss it if the HOG towing is as good. Certainly heard horror stories from both.

I have used the HOG Roadside Assistance twice with good results, once on two wheels and once with the rig. The first time, I was way out in the "boonies" and the hardest part was getting the lady on the other end of the call to understand exactly where I was. Once she did, she said that the towing service would be there within an hour. 45 minutes later, he rolled up in a rollback, put the front wheel of my bike on sort of a dolly and pulled it onto the truck. Even though I thought I would be taken to the nearest bike shop, he asked where I wanted it taken. Told him to take it to my own dealer which was 85 miles away and off we went. Second time was very much like the first except we were on I-40 in Oklahoma and I wanted it taken to the HD dealer in Ft. Smith, Arkansas (60+ miles). No problem with that either and they took care of my lodging for the night too. On the other hand, I have heard some riders say that they were never picked up at all, and others say that they didn't get taken to where they wanted to go. I think a lot of it depends on who the contracted towing service is and I'm sure there would certainly be a limit to how far they would haul your bike. If I ever have to use it again, I might have a horror story to tell, but so far it has been worth the cost of membership and the $29 per year.
