Once you are in Key Largo ( the northen most key) there is only one way in and one way out to Key West. For years I lived in Miami. Card Sound does nothing for you, trust me. On your first trip down, don't bother with it. Unless US1 is closed and there will be troopers and sherriffs telling you it is closed.......Pm me if you have any questions on this, I know it well.

LOL!

Guys, T is my brother we're meeting in the Keys and the reason for the trip. His, an SO's generosity with a place to stay made this whole thing possible.

Just bought himself an awesome 09 Classic in Sunglo Red...I'm green with envy! Glad he stopped by to check the site out.

Thanks again to all that contributed with comments and goodwill. The response was much more than expected.

1.99% ? ? ? ....

Let the ride begin!!!

Will have some pics when I return to share, if I can get them to post.

If your going to stay in Orlando then go to Key West I would jump on 91 down and cut over and go along Okeechobee to Belle Glade then go south to Homestead. Look at the map that was posted and click on the negative and you will see the route I am talking about. I hate city driving and this has some wide open country. I lived on the west coast 11 mile from aligator alley and roamed this country. It is a very peaceful ride. Fill up in Belle Glade and your good to go to the middle keys. Good Luck and ride safe.

I have also been to the Keys via this route. This is a nice ride and you can roll. I believe you go thru Sebring and some other small but notable towns. If I was starting in Orlando I definitely would consider this route.

Also about the 1.99% that I reported in an earlier post, I didn't see any signs at my local dealer on Friday when I was in. Perhaps it was something that an individual dealer had lined up. I saw it reported by another poster in a recent pricing thread.

Your are not pitiful at all. That is a good bike you are on, the Yamaha triples were great machines, as evidenced by thirty years of life. I have had a lot of bikes, and althoug I like my Road Glide, it is not superior by any means to many I have owned.

Renting may be the best thoing you ave done, you may decide to stay with the Yamahas.

Hey guys,
Almost 3 pages of posts and NOBODY said anything about buying a used Electraglide! I don't know about Florida, but both of my local dealers have a bunch of excellent used touring bikes. If price is a big issue, consider a used 05 or 06 model bike. In my opinion the 05-6 years are the best of the 88's and a fuel injected eglide standard in those years will be the best bang for the buck. 07 starts with the 96" motor and 6 speed transmission. They will be more money, but it's worth it. Don't believe all the bad rumors about the 07s I've got one as well as several of my riding buds and except for everybody installing the IDS, which I think is a must, all have been trouble free.Other than that, I'm with everybody else and say that once you and the OL ride one, you'll buy one SOON. Keep us posted on the trip and WHEN you get the HD. LOTS of pictures PLEASE!!!!

Okeechobee...HB - that's sounds interesting might consider that - then 441 to W Palm. Thought about Rt 1 along the shore but riding out to the Keys we will plenty of that. Interior of Fl might be a nice change and road looks pretty good.

UP2 - appreciate the kind words on my old girl (not the wife!). I really thought I would get a Jap bashing on this site but have seen none of it. Surprisingly, sounds like a lot of us have had a rice burner at one time or another, and some still do. The new Yammys (Star to be politically correct) are really awesome machines.

To be honest, I love the Raider and would like to have one someday for local hopping, clean no dresser. To fill out the stable it would be a Beemer RT. No plans on ever getting rid of the 750 - like the wife had it too long to part ways - they both have been way to good to me.

That said, I always have dreamed of a HD and the new ones keep getting better. Might have the Japs to thank for that as they raised the bar and the Mother Ship recognized that (unlike Motown!). WillieG and the boys have done their homework and deserve my business, not to mention supporting the good ol USA and the tradition behind it. One weakness of mine is tradition and there ain't no better than HD!

One more question HB touched on: What is the fuel range for the '08 Ultra and how do I monitor? Fuel gauge accurate or do I do it the old fashioned way with the odometer?

Now for a real stupid question (I know I promised only 1): I am not aware of a reserve on the HD's like on my Yammy - is there and if so how does it work. I think not, but had to ask.

3 days and counting!

TN:
Thought about a used - appreciate the insight on years to consider, may have to weight the option if it means getting one in the barn sooner. My preference, like everyone's is a new ride. Considering I would have no intention of ever getting rid of it ( case in point the 750 for 30 yrs) - I like to get my toys new and baby them from day one. But there is something to be said for the value of used. A lot of them out there sitting in garages not being ridden.

Gotta ask? IDS???? Stage one?

Still newbie to some of this, but I'm catching on - thanks to everyone here.

Might have to get help posting pics when we get back - but I'll give it my best shot.

On another note, we have a small place in the Adirondack Mts of NY along Lake Champlain. Real popular ride as we see lots of bikes go by all summer. To anyone considering a ride up that way keep in touch, willing to help with great routes and places to see. If your goin thru welcome to stop in for a refreshment and chat.

IDS = Isloated Drive System, HD's new term for an ancient Norton (and later, Japanese) rubber cushioning device attached to or enclosed within the rear hub. It acts as a crude shock absorber for the drive chain/belt. They actually work real well and greatly reduce drive-line jitter and noise.

Stage I = A modest performance upgrade (less restrictive exhaust and air cleaner with an appropriate re-tune). Used to overcome limitations imposed by big brother.
