never mind a new bolt I busted a rod and it will not break again.
my wife is more than 100 lbs but the force from that little step up, on one foot board was just too much

Even though my GF is only about 100 LBS and I think everything should hold just fine, I am planning on replacing both of them with grade-8 ASAP.

Stock passenger footboard bracket bolt IS a grade 8 bolt.

I have seen al least 3 other threads on this, not Kury, but HD, dealer installed. They probably need to go to next-size-up bolt. It is clear that there is too much leverage for the current bolt.

Don't count on it. The MoCo went with 3/8-16 bolts on the '09 rider footboard brackets and that is a step down from the 1/2-13 bolt on '08 and older models.

This inexcusible failure is potentially life threatening. Is there a "warning" included with the part? Has this been brought to the MOCO's attention?

(edit)

OK............I just looked at the part. Yes, there would be a huge strain on the bolt if the passengers entire body weight were placed on the board. There should definitly be a posted warning on the part.

Hell. I don't let the wife touch the floorboards when she gets on. She's 5'2" and can climb on a couple of different ways - depending who's on first.

I'm going to keep a close eye on this, since I have these on my 08 Ultra. I thought I saw on another thread that a grade-8 bolt of that size should be rated to hold several thousand pounds, so maybe some bad bolts out there? I've also heard that over-torquing might be part of the problem, but another thing I've noticed on my bike, with the passenger floorboards mounted straight up like in my sig-picture they ride steady and solid, but about a month ago I move them a notch forward, so the mount is at about the 1:00 o'clock position and when folded up there is a constant vibration in them at highway speed....so maybe the mounting position has something to do with it?

A looong time ago I put polished stainless bolts on my floor boards. Never had a problem with breaking a bolt. Stainless is only a grade 2 I think. Could it be it was a defective Bolt?-Al

Stock MoCo bolt is a stainless steel bolt stamped H-D GRD 8. Could have been over torqued.

I use the #8 bolts ( black carbon alloy steel) fr Lowes and haven't had a issue but OL only has gone on two trips 3k miles then I take them off, has anyone broke one of these? If the HD ones are SS? they could be overtorqued which is probable the problem. I just google stainless steel #8 stength and bassically they are equal to a grade 5 w 125k PSI vs. grade 8 150k psi. One article fr ebay talked about using anti seize but reducing the tq fr 20ft/lbs by 20% so that's not much. I think the case harden #8 is the solution but the MOCO will never admit this. Again has anyone broke a grade #8 (black) bolt?
