I asked the guy at the parts counter about upgrading the plugs and what he suggested. He told me that unless I had upgraded the motor, then there was no reason to upgrade the plugs. He said why change from the ones that were designed to be used in the motor.

Probably crap but an interesting comment

WOW thts a lot of money for a plug set... My dealer charged me $7.and change for OEM plugs and they work very well. Did notice a big difference as I changed them at 15,000 miles.

i started running autolites in my sportster and changed them out with every oil change. with the fi on my road king, they last much longer, just changed my set out at 15k, the originals still *looked* good. but i figure for the cost of the autolites, its cheap insurance to change them out every 10-15k. i also like to keep a set on hand during a road trip, just in case.

Default Ion sensing system..??

I hear the new Ion Sensing System (ISS) uses Dilithium Crystals and works in conjunction with the Flux capacitor. While changing the plugs alone should not create any ill side effects, I would be careful not to disturb the Ionization Portal Initiator while tugging on the plug wires.

Devil dog, you're speaking my language now. Thanks for the input.

The parts guy at the dealership could have sold me the expensive plugs, but he recommended stock. Never had a problem.

Same here... HD plugs are cheap (about 3.xx EACH). i have an '02 RK... and am running the higher grade CHampions right now (got on sale for $0.88 each).... cuz I am still tuning in some carb mods. I am going through a set a week (or 2 or 3 sets when doing "chopping")... but will go back to HD standard when done tuning.

Autolite 4163 (one-step colder than stock), about $1.50 each. Runs great and ion-discharge knock sensor works fine. Has been installed for 12k miles--removed recently, looked new, re-gapped, and re-installed. FWIW, stock heat-range plug is the 4164.

There's nothing magical about a V-Twin that dictates using a spark plug that costs $3.30-8.00 each, not even the fact that it is air-cooled. An automotive plug is quite good enough.
