I had a 1950 model Hydra Glide which looked VERY similar to that bike. Mine had the tank shift and all just like that one.

The only real difference I can see between my bike and that one is that one apparently has dual exhausts while mine had the 2 into 1 single exhaust on the right side.

I believe that the toe shifter became standard in 1953, so I'm going to say that bike is a 1951 or 1952 model.

It is my understanding that the Hydra Glide (fat tubes with oil in the forks) was first introduced in 1950. Prior to that, they had the "springer" type front suspension. I might be wrong, but that's what I was always told and I've been riding Harleys since 1963.

Pheebo, thanks for posting this picture - it's what isn't told that holds the greatest joy. What could your Dad have been remembering with that tear in his eye? Who knows what memories seeing the picture might have brought? I pray that you remember him well during this Thanksgiving season!

Thumbs up Thanks Pastor John

We all have many things to be thankful for. I read your post and pictures about your ride in the mountains of Va. Hope we get to ride together sometime.

I met one of my neighbors (72 yrs old) where I have been living for 12 yearsI had seen him around but never talked to him, he was riding his Shadow around with load pipes. You could tell he was pretty happy about riding it. and he saw my scoot sitting there so he pulled up and we started talking about bikes, of course, and he was telling me about his first bike that was a Harley that looks real close to your pic.but when he got married his wife said it would have to go. Well after talking for awhile he invited me to his place to show me the picture of him and his Harley he sure was proud of that bike. Wished he never got rid of it. Well after all the years of non riding his wife finally gave in when he told her he was going to get another bike (Shadow) Now he has eye trouble and can't ride but he still has it. Sometimes riding by his place I see him out there warming it up and listening to the roar. I went to a nursing home to see him awhile back and all we talked about was bikes and that harley and my Lowrider. Got to go see him again someday and talk about .....you know BIKES. Sorry about the long winded story but it is a memeory I won't forget.
