Default Tire size and Brands

Well, iti is time to replace my rear tire. I have been searching the form for suggestions and have a few questions.
1. Can I run a radial on the rear and a Bias on the front. The bike a 2002 FLHT Standard had a new tire at time of purchase (Dunlap D402). I have only put about 4,500 miles on it and it is still in great shape. Should I stick with Bias until the front needs relpaced as well.
2. How wide can I go on the rear? And what are the tire sizes. Been looking at Metzer and Michelin but not sure what the size would be. Dunpal D402 reads MT90B16
3. Finally, The Dunlap Elite III. What can you tell me about these.

Thank you for any feedback

If you have done a search you have a good deal of information already.

Since I have no experience with the radial/bias mix or Elite III, I have nothing to add.

Regarding the width, the tire on your bike now is 130 mm. You could put the Dunlop MU85B16 on it which is a 140mm tire and became the OEM size with the 2004 model year using the same wheel that's on your bike. A good friend of mine did this with his '03 Ultra and had some minor rubbing from the sidewall on the belt guard. Others here have reported the same thing or no problem with rubbing or no problem using a Pingel spacer--doesn't seem to be any uniform experience.

Can't really help you with hard information; but at least you'll get a bump to the first page.

Good luck with your research.

Don't forget to look at Avon. That is the only tire I run on my bikes. I just use the standard size matching which can usually be found on each companies website. I see no reason to put a bigger rear tire on but each to thier own.

If you go to www.motosport.com they are having a sale on all their tires. You can save about $40.00 on a dunlop tire, but they have other brands on sale also.

Im going to try the Dunlop E3 tire on the front of my trike after the first of the year. Dunlop doesnt make a Elite 3 radial tire for touring bikes. Our stock rim sizes are MT90 16inch front & MU 90 16inch rear up to 08' models

Biggest difference is the compound and tread design along with load carrying. The E3 rear will carry a little more then the Elite 2. Im looking for a little more wear on the front with E3 due to my trike scrubbing the front tire flat

Good luck and hope this help some

The MU85B16 is NOT a 140m.m. tire. My Metzler MU 85 measures 145.6m.m. My 140 measures 139.31. Thats about 1/4'" wider than the 140 and about 1/8 per side. 130 Dunlop measures 125.318. The MU is 20mm wider than the stock 130 or 10.mm (.393") per side. I always do a little measuring before changing things. Life's simpler that way. Check it out and you'll find the MU85B16 is a different and wider tire than the 140!

settle down Northside.....my o7 King uses the Dunlop 402 MU85HB16 on the rear....

Everyone I talk to SAYS it is a 140...Although I have seen charts showing it is 5.2" wide which multiplied by the 25.4 mm/inch make it equate to a 132.08.....

Harleypingman was correct in what he was saying....it is all subjective.....who really cares?

Do like I do....do a search on the Internet, check out some tires that you like, see what the specs are and go from there.

I wished I could run something other than a 402 on mine (I know I can run a different brand, just using Dunlop for the comparison), but tires like the 404 and others dont carry the same weight rating. Saving a little cost and loosing safety is not where I would go when i am on 2 wheels.

my $.02
