You can make it look somewhat better by re-aiming the light more toward the center. Mine had a big gap on the left side and small gap on the right that I corrected.
sorry guys i should of done a search first...
found out that it seems to be a common problem and we just deal with it.
i am concerned aout reaiming the head light.. waiting on the sun to go down then i will get it right...
I was told by my local HD part's guy that the trim rings don't fit on the 09's. He said that they fit, but they spin around the headlight. I recently purchased an 09 ultra and was going to have those added, but until they resolve this problem I'm going to wait. I'm anxious to hear if anyone with an 09 has been able to get these to fit. I've used them in the past and always had a small gap.
I too have an '09 SG and added a headlight trim ring and had the gap problem. What I found that worked out better than doing it myself was to have my wife squeeze the bottom part of the trim ring (I was crouched down and she reached over the top of me) as I tightened up the bolt and that seemed to work on making the gap a little smaller. A gap is still there but not quite as much.
The answer is to take the bike to an orthodontist, let him fit it for braces. In two years it will be fixed. The real scoop is those things have been bad for at least two years. Had 3 dealer installed on my 08 and the gap drove me nuts. It's pulled and now I scour the net for something else. I think I'll do a post... by the way there is no guarantee the orthodontist will help, but hey he has to send his kids to college.
This is how I fixed mine. Take off the stock trim ring. I know it says to mount it over it, but it doesn't fit. Go to home depot and get some magnetic strips with a sticky backing on it. It is about 3/8" wide and it comes in a roll. Then, stick that in the inside of the trim ring. You will have to adjust it, you probably won't line the whole thing with the magnets, but you will find the amount you need. Then, bolt it back on and enoy a gap free trim ring.
here's the "fix"
loosen off the factory trim ring, I mean almost all the way. Install the visor trim ring over it just like the directions say to. Tighten it down and you will have about 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap. (normal) now ride the bike for a few miles and tighten the visor trim ring down just a tad more, Repeat this about three or four time and here is what it will look like when you are done. NO MORE GAP!!
disregard the 2005 date on the pic. it's a 2008 bike and my camera is stuck on that date.
