Just bought a 2005 FLHRI Vivid black Road King. I pick it up Saturday. It is 130 miles home on the interstate. How should i ride it?

Break it in exactly like the service manager tells you. That first 50 miles is really important, and will not include any interstate riding.

I take it easy for the first 50 miles or so, vary speed and rpm, stay outta 5th gear......THEN RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT
and remember the first ride is always the breast

50 miles is break in! The rings need to seat well and the motor needs some rev time and pressure to deat those babies. Everything else (that 500 miles thingy) is pretty much a CYA for the MoCo...look how many RUBs are buying heavy scoots and have never banged a gear!

Don't lug the motor, vary the RPM between 200 - 400 RPM, run some short (5 to 10 second) bursts in 2nd or 3rd gear to 4K or so and let the pipes rap on decelaration (the pressure on the tope end).

After the first 50 miles doing that, run that baby...70 -80 mph for three miles or so, then a cool down for a mile, run it back up, do some gearing down, etc for another 100 miles.

Use the brakes! Bakes need to seat in as well...they are slippery when new!

Regardless of what the dealer says, drain the crankcase oil at about 250 miles (there will be shavings and fine dust in that motor!) and again at 1,000 miles.

Big thing here is, if something is gonna break on a new scoot...break it right away!

I have broken in two new scoooters this way, and three complete rebuilds the same way. babying the motor serves no purpose at all...but, that first 50 is when the break in happens and is done!

I trailered mine home and then broke it in around town. I followed the break in requirements for the first 50 miles and then it was game on. I did not go above 60 for the first 100 miles...and then after that...I was riding it as I saw fit. I figure that if you ride it and break it early, it will be good to go in the long run. The 1st 50 miles is the most important miles. Follow the rules there...

Congrats on your new ride...Vivid Black rules.....

Ride on....

Picked up my new FLHRI Road King at appleton's in Clarksville TN on Saturday. The ride home was great. I really like this bike. Appleton's was great to deal with. They sold the bike at MSRP.
