I know this has been brought up, but I plan on painting my inner fairing and am wondering how long it takes to remove /install? Also if there is anything i should be aware of?
You're going to want to pick up a service manual if you don't already have one. This was a job I was really reluctant to tackle, but did it anyway. I think it took about 2 hours to tear it down and about the same to put it back together. It helps to have a second set of hands when re-assembling.
Unplug all of the gauges and mark their location with masking tape or something, pay attention to the routing of the clutch cable, etc... Take pics at various stages so you can refer back to them if you get stuck.
I done the very same as STRO1965 and while I was at it I went ahead and changed my handlebars. It really is a time consuming but simple process if you take your time.
+1 on getting some help and marking things as the center brackets would be tough by yourself. I had the most trouble with the throttle cables, they had to be just right or they wanted to hang the throttle.
Removed mine from the ugly RG last Wednesday, took my time and labeled everything. I'd say 3 hours so far.
I would imagine with a painted piece going back that it'll take much longer to put back together. It'll probably never run again
You'll be okay, just get the manual and label the bazilion connectors.
TIPS--(1) If it's an '07 and older, buy a couple of the brass ferrules used to secure the throttle and idle cables--they can be easily lost and delay reassembly. They're cheap and you can return what you don't use.
(2) Cover the fender and tank to prevent damage to the paint.
(3) If you have an '06 or newer bike, find out now how to remove/install the ignition without the special HD tool--'05 and older is simple by comparison.
(4) Replace your stock speakers if you haven't done so already.
(5) Spend $25 and install a square of Dynaxorb from Dynamat on the inside of the outer fairing behind each speaker.
(6) Lube the clutch and idle/throttle cables (if you have them).
Most important--BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL. It's a simple, but tedious project requiring no special tools except a T27 Torx drive/bit.
