Default Another Gear/Cam Question

Greetings,
Here is the question about gear driven cams. I understand about checking the crank run out prior to installation and also about checking gear backlash and such. After all the checking, installation and reassembly occurs, during normal operations as all parts wear thru normal operations, what happens to the critical check points that were done before. Is the crank run out and backlash not an issue again, as far as the cams/gears are concerned. What I am asking I guess, say the tolerances are within limits but on the extreme limits is this just short time until something needs to be fixed or do the parts wear together and its not an issue. Hope this is clear and not too much in a circle.

The only thing that could change the tolerances of the gear drive would be the flywheels shifting (scissoring). That would throw the run out to out of spec, which would cause the drive gear on the pinion shaft to run tight and loose as it rotates. You'd probably hear that. I've been running geardrives in my '02 for 5 years with no problems. I doubt the tensioners would have lasted that long. Properly set up, and the included gear is nearly always the proper one (you can get larger or smaller to get proper gear lash), the gear drives last indefinitly.

This pic shows what happened to my gear drive when the crank scissored.

The last ride of the year in the fall of 06 I was romping on it pretty hard and thought I heard something when I shifted at high rpm's but didn't pay too much attention to it as the bike seemed to be running alright. Fast forward to the first ride in the spring of 07, I was out for a leisurely ride with my wife and recall some whining (not from my wife) but thought it was just the sound the bike made until all hell broke loose, with the amount of noise it made I was sure the motor was toast. That must have been the instant the gear broke.

After I got the bike home ( I actually rode it 2 miles) and started taking things apart it was pretty obvious what the problem was. Besides the broken gear a gap was visible between the pinion shaft and the bushing. Needless to say there were many other trashed parts. The oil pump was shot as well as the cam plate being cracked. I split the cases and sent the crank off to Darkhorse and was told by them it was not repairable. They sent me a rebuilt, balanced and Proplugged stock crank which has withstood as much abuse as I can throw at it with my 98" motor. The new crank has also made the motor much smoother. I also had the Timken conversion done so it can handle a little more power which I intend to give it over the winter.
