I know it’s a plus but I don’t understand why people get so excited about the parts being added to the 2 year warranty. What can happen to the air cleaner or the exhaust that would possibly be covered?
I would not worry about mods until you have a few miles on the bike. During the pre-delivery run...
1. Ask that the air pressure in the rear shock be tested. Have them tell you how much pressure is in the rear shock. Watch the tech do this.
2. Take the bike for a ride, a good long ride. See how it shifts. Any clutch whine? Stop in some traffic..... Any excessive heat? Does it sputter, stall, or pop on decel?
3. Braking.... Is the front brake quiet?
4. BIG ONE... Take some CD's... Does the CD player skip alot?
5. Go over the bike with a fine tooth comb. Any blemishes? Any rattles? Anything loose? Check the bracket for the exhaust coming out of the rear jug. Make sure there is a nut on it and it is tight.
6. Enjoy. But if your bike fails on any of the above, leave it at the dealer, and insist that they fix it. Otherwise you will end up fighting with them about it.
I have no idea what could go wrong to be honest. You're right that it's just a few extra parts but I was planning to get it done anyway so I figured why not throw it under warranty. For me the excitement was the sound of the beast more than the warranty. Warranty was more piece of mind.
Thanks for all the tips guys!! All of my bikes have been of the carburetor'd sort, so am finding there is a whole new language to learn now that I'm ready to buy a bagger. I am still going through the threads here on ECMs, 8-degree vs. 25-degree injectors, serts, pcIIIs, etc.
And to think all I was worried about was how hot it would be behind a fairing! [sm=oopssign.gif]

Maybe because some dealers try to claim the air cleaner/exhaust caused the cam chain tensioner failure/hick-up/stalling/farting etc.. problems[:@]
I ran my bike pretty stock for the first 10k miles (6 months). Hang out here and with your local HOG chapter...there will be a never ending list of upgrades. Take your time...and over time...you will discover your list changes and evolves as you ride more.
If there are any accessories that you know you are gonna want then i would get them from Zanottis or Chicago and if the dealer wants to know why you didnt get them there just tell the dealer these places give a 20-25% discount no problem might get you a better deal in the future.
Ride it stock for a while. Hang out at local HOG, go to rally's like Bike Week and Sturgis and most importantly keep reading this site. The harley store will become your second home. Some good sites to read.
Quit worrying about spending more money for mods that may or just as likely may not make the bike more reliable. Do you really want to add another dollar to the price tag of a $20,000+ toy? Get out there and ride. The wind and road won't cost you anything.
