I spent several away from home during my career in the Navy, I think the worst one was 1979. Punching holes in the middle of the Indian Ocean and the only thing to look forward to was three weeks upkeep in Diego Garcia tied up next to a submarine tender!
My son and his family leave on Monday for his first duty station in the Army. At least they were home for one more Christmas. They are going to Anchorage Alaska! Not sure if they will be able to come home next year or not. He might be in Iraq or Afganistan, who knows?
God bless all of us that have been there and God bless those that are out there now!
I spent 1967 Christmas at Dian base camp and 1968 Christmas in Pho loi (spelling?) base camp. I have never put up a xmas tree since then. Christmas never made sense to me after NAM.

Don't know why it took the meaning from you, can only guess, but I was not there and will not pretend to understand. All I can say is Thanks BRO and all vets, current servicemen and women. We are proud of and pray for each and every one of you.
I salute you and all that are serving our country.
It saddens me deeply that so many were away from
home and their families especially this time of the year.
Again, Thank you and may God Bless. I wish you
a safe and speedy return home.
All I can say, "Thank you to all of you who served our country in the past and present". I'd love to enlist the Marines, but I can't. Being Deaf sucks though !.
At least I got to be your brother on this site...That is riding our Harleys.
Spent my one Christmas in Ft. Gordon GA pulling guard duty. The next was on Firebase Bastogne in I Corps in Viet Nam, the following in Camp Eagle just outside of Hue/Phu Bai. The next year was at home. My father bought me an HO train set. I asked him how old he thought I was, he didn't answer. He still thought of me as a kid.
First Christmas away was Ft. Wolters TX; second was Camp Evans, third was Phu Loi. When I got home, Mom said "what are you doing here?" Merry Christmas!
