I ride an '05 RK Custom...and I'm replacing the front forks with chrome...while I'm doing all my winter upgrades...I'm now also considering installing Race Tech emulators...(and in the long run new rear shocks as well)...
Does anyone have experience with this install? Do I need Race Tech Springs for a proper install as well or can I use the stock HD springs and just install the cartridges?
you'd be better off doing the springs too, as Race Tech sets all of their stuff up by the weight of the bike and passenger. The factory springs are not capable of carrying the weight of the bike IMHO
To put it bluntly, the cheap crap HD passes off as suspension components ( Showa IIRC) is garbage.
I know a lot of guys who ride the same rice bike I do swear by Race Tech, but I know people who use ( and work for ) Traxxion Dynamics, and that company makes a sweet fork upgrade for the HD suspension, which is what I am going to use on my bike soon.

I pick up a set of Race Tech Gold Valve with one inch drop springs, I am all ready running the progressive 440 heavy duty shock in the rear, took a few miles and feels great now. I just got a set of chrome forks on E Bay for cheap 130.00 bucks no exchange, and will be doing the front end in Jan., been still doing a lot of riding these last two weeks. Also will be putting in a 08 swing arm with Stabo bushing... hopefully it will be a solid ride.
