Default Engine Build Questions

Im been thinking of an engine build was thinking 107. Stopped by my local indy a few days ago to ask. Told him kinda what I was thinking and he said he would work up some options on what I want and I think a 113. So since I am no wrench myself I need help when I go talk to them today of what questions to ask when they give me my options. There is a nice sticky in the tuning section about 5 questions to ask your tuner. Was hoping to get some help so I could kinda figure out what Im getting.

You need to look in the archives here and find out what other people have been paying for 103-107 upgrades, these bikes have been out for 3 years now and I would be leary of an indy that can't give you a price without doing research, that tells me he hasn't worked on any and I wouldn't want to be his ginny pig.
A 103-107 build is reasonable to do, anything larger requires taking the entire engine out and tearing it down for at least a spigot rebore for larger cylinders.
I was going to have a set of cams put in my bike and I found the Harley dealer was doing the job for 1/2 what the indy's where charging just becuase they hadn't done any and where still charging the same price as older bikes.

Like how expensive. When I said he was working up option I think he meant just a list of parts he would use. He gave me a rough cost of a engine build. I asked if he was familar with HQ because thats what I hear about the most. He said no he uses axtell? I just wanted to know what to ask when he give me this sheet of all this matl. What should I ask about. Crank, pushrods, pistons, tuning? Just dont know what to ask.

Call up Head quarters or GMR or any of the other WELL KNOWN BUILDERS and buy a proven set of parts that they recommend for your particular application. Then take them to your indy and let him install them for you. They're track record is proven. there'll be no guess work

Lyn - What did your build dyno at and is it the 107ST? Did you use the HQ build sheet? Are you happy with the performance and reliability? Thanks

the 107 is dead, I totaled it Saturday---

HQs makes quality stuff -- I have had two HQs builds the 103 on a 07 SG 105hp 116Tq, the bike was extemely fast--it would hit 100 before you know, slide the back tire and do wheelies with the clutch.

The 107 was a stroger motor but I never got a chance to test it; I had issues with the TBW by the time I worked those issues out I crashed the bike -- I did not dyno the bike becuase it had a auto tuner.

Axtell, GMR, HQs and S&S (these I know about) make quality motor kits -- I would recommend you get a COMPLETE motor kit -- parts that are designed to work together--learned this from PhilM and Dalton.

At a minimum for 103/107 besides the kit you will need a (lock up) clutch, SERT, and exhaust -- many use the stock exhaust with slip-ons or a good 2/1 (if you want to get all out of the build) a good tuner is must.

If you go beyond 107 you will have to split the cases and get the crank worked by dark horse or similar shop $1500 to who knows what---the HQs 107 (your heads worked) is slightly more than the 103

Lyn - thanks for the info. I am strongly considering the the 107ST build from HQ. Great advice. Sorry to hear about your bike.

I just built an HQ107ST & had a thread on it:

I can assure you that bike will GET-IT, and it's smooth as smooth gets.

Lyn ~ WTF happened? You OK?
