Most of the dealerships i have been in have the shop labor rate and the prices for the 2500,5000,and 10000 mile services on a menu type board. The local dealer here i belive is 320.00 for the 10,000 mile service. To me it looks like where they reamed you was on the tires and mounting them...i had a rear replaced last monday and the grand total out the door was 214.00 (130.00 for the tire and 1hr labor plus 7%tax) and i bitched about that. I would say that there labor rate is 50.00 per hr based that 5 hrs on the 10k service came to 250.00...which is better than the 70.00 they charge here.

SWAK

The price on the tires is high. The labor to mount is high considering the overlap with a 10K service.

The do it yourself idea saves big bucks, not to mention providing the peace of mind that it is done to your satisfaction.

That looks high but probably normal. I was charged 181.00 for my last rear [:@] but I was on the road so I was kinda stuck. Plus they charge the s**t out of you for the rear on a bagger anyway. Whatever you can do yourself will save you big bucks and you will be more comfortable with your ride. Like you said, live and learn.[&:]

WOW! The mounting and balance costs are way high. I just had a new rear tire installed. Central Texas H-D here in Austin charged me $99 for the tire and $60 for the install and balance. One small town shop near my place wanted $175 for the tire alone. Prices do vary, so we have to shop around for what's best for us.

I agree on the shop around part. When I replaced the rear tire on my 05RK, I bought a Dynlop 402 with the Harley Davidson name on it, narrow white wall, had it mounded and balanced for a total of $118 out the door - at the local Yamaha dealer! I carried the rear wheel in, went and had a cup of coffe, then picked it up an hour later.

Well....

The damage is already done but as I said before I will be doing my own services from now on. I have the full blown manual which will be a great help. Once I get home I'll be comparing some of these item prices with prices from previous work they have done. It's just disheartening when you perceive you have built a good relationship with a shop / owner and then you get the feeling of being taken advantage of.

Thanks for the replies,

Brian

Thats just nasty.
I don't have a new bike so I just get service every 3000 miles or so with no specific checks. This is a private guy.
Oil, grease & filter
Lube all cables
Change oil in forks
Trans oil
Adjust primary & drive belt
Adjust clutch
General inspection

$125.00 cdn.

He installed my Rineharts for $75.00

My 10k service cost me $233 for everything but tires and air cleaner since I already have a stage 1 kit. My tires cost about $80 - $100 less each. It's not realbad but they got you on the tires. There is a good local shop NW of Denver who wants return customers and doesn't gouge anyone.

Brian,
In looking at the service manual it appears the most difficult parts of the service is adjusting the primary chain, and drive belt tension. Your drive belt tension should usually be ok, I think it calls for about 1/4" of play with 10 lbs of pressure put on it. For the primary chain adjustment, I just installed HD's automatic primary chain adjuster ( Zanottis for $79.00). It was easy enough to install, and is a one shot deal. Now the only thing left for your service is fluids, spark plugs, cable adjustments, and checking torque on major components, all of which you can do yourself. Besides, I really don't trust the dealer. Just like I believe Jiffy Lube is checking 79 components of my car for that $29.00 oil change. They leave you a 1/2 qt. low, dump in some washer fluid, and say "come back soon".
