Get a decent tent; and practice setting it up and taking it down a few times at home before you hit the road. (It's a tad bit harder to do in the dark or when it's raining on you).

Get a good sleeping bag; a good air mattress or pad; and one of those miniature pillows that camping stores sell. Second only to your tent keeping you dry, getting a good night's sleep is the most important thing in having a good camping experience.

You'll be inclined to bring along everything you might possibly need. Don't fall for it. Take the very least that you can.

Start out with a short, 1 or 2 day trip.

Enjoy. Motorcycles and camping were made for each other.

cms1528, thanks for these web links. They seem to have some good information that can be used to plan a trip a friend and I have been talking about doing.

motorcycle camping is the very best it gets and I sleep next to my bike so if you mess with it you mess with me.

CSMHOG, thanks! The trip we're planning will be my first ride and camp trip so any and all information is good.

I've done it on a Road King and a KTM 640 Adventure. The key is to travel light...Indian Style. You want to think like an ultra light backpacker. Pick up Backpacker magazine at a book store. There hasn't been an issue where I didn't get something out of it. The more you know...the less you need.

For Example: Use a 1 Liter Nalgene water bottle to hold water to drink….store hot water to keep you warm in your sleeping bag on a cool night….or fill ž full with water, then add soap to wash your synthetic clothes. Believe it or not this does work.

Leave anything cotton at home…it sucks up moisture and takes forever to dry. Use synthetics for your clothes. If it can’t be hand washed and dried overnight don’t take it.

Forget about anything that's leather....get riding gear that gives you all-weather/all-purpose protection. None of this stopping to put on rain gear crap.

This advice works for non-camping road trips too. Now hit the road and have a great time.
