Default Nashville in March

In Wisconsin we have 50+ inches of snow and winter just began. I'm thinking about heading for the Nashville area in March. I'm looking for suggestions about where to ride in the area and what to expect for weather. Winter has been brutal and its a long wait to spring.

Haven't done it yet but the Natchez Trace originates just outside Nashville and is supposed to be very scenic and relaxing. Not too far to the TN/NC Smoky Mountain area that Road Runner magazine just featured. Weather will be highly variable for both temperature and precipitation.

Here is a map of the area, showing some roads that others have rated as good for moptorcycles. Its a good site, and you can choose whatever area you wish. I only choose the nashville area, as thats what you asked for.

I would not recomend heading to the Smokey's in March. weather is too unpredictable up in the mountians that time of year.

I live in Nashville, and as kjmorgan stated, the Natchez Trace Parkway is very nice for a ride. Its about 450 miles long, and runs from Hwy. 100 in West Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi. Lot's of hills and turns, with a number of places to pull off and rest. I live in the city and the start (or end) of "the Trace" is only about 20 minutes from me. I haven't ridden the full length myself, but have done about 120 miles. The traffic during the week is almost non-existant and the weekends really aren't too bad either. Currently, there is a detour at the TN/AL state line, but only about 10-15 miles...not bad. There's also a number of state highways that are very scenic and with very little traffic. I just moved here in October and the weather here hasn't been so great since mid-to late-November...a lot of rain, cold temps, and a little snow & ice. Hopefully by March, things will be much nicer. We did have some good weather a couple of days ago and I took my Super Glide out on the Trace for about 75 miles before turning around. Nice ride.

I've been here for 61 years, and for me the Trace is good for about an hour, then it gets to be pretty boring. I prefer to ride the state highways, which tend to be 2 lane roads. North, south, east and west within an hour or so from Nashville there are dozens of small towns complete with town squares, and mom & pop shops and cafes. I prefer the area south of Nashville in Williamson county. Beautiful farms & rolling hills.

The weather can be dicy in March, which is just before the start of spring here. But, we are pretty far south compared to where you live, so what we think of as being cold would probably be just rtight for you.

We ride year round, so it can't be too bad. It was 50 here today, and Fri & Sat. it's going to be in the mid-50's with bright sunshine. You can expect about the same in March. To be safe, bring a few layers.
