Default Front Shock Tuning - Street Glide

Wondering if there is anything you can do, to tune the shocks on the front of my 09 Street Glide. To me, they seem a little soft in comparison to my buddies 09 Ultra. I know the extra weight helps the Ultra, but my front seems to take bumps harder than what I would like. I've got the rear set up pretty well with the air adjustments, but just curious if anyone knows if anything can be done to the front shocks to give them a little more dampening, or if it is even possible.

Tks!
Bill

Hello Bill,

If it is really soft and sometimes bottoming out on hard bumps i would take it back to the dealer and have it looked at Maybe there isnt enough pre load on the springs in the fork tubes. Not sure if this helps or not

To my knowledge the forks are none adjustable. Since it is an 09' I'd have the dealer look at it then or change out them out with progressive springs.

Yea, I believe that is what is happening. Hopefully, it is something that simple. Thanks for the suggestion!

Replace the stock fork oil with some SE Heavy. That may help.

I did mine but have not ridden the bike to give any feedback. There are several threads on this site that will give you information on the oil change and the riders feedback.

Read my web site and you will see a set of 2007 Street Glide springs. They have 1" less travel than an a E.G./Ultra and only have 3/4" of travel until they are into the "hard" part of the spring. I have posted this along with the calculations to view for yourself. Count the preload, count/add up the spaces, add the thickness of the coils, and there you go. The springs are already progressively wound and have cartridge emulators from HD stock. Do not confuse these springs with Progressive (the company) and Race Tech emulators as they are not the same just some more Chinese knock offs HD is famous for.

You will never have good suspension using these components.

PS PM masterblaster and ask him what happened when he Replace the stock fork oil with some SE Heavy. We went for a long ride that became short as he had to turn around. He had a longer suspension as he has a 2009 Ultra.

FastHarley
Great info, and though I'm fairly wrenchy with stuff, I'm not so sure I can tackle the forks. Too bad you're so far south of me, or I would ride it down! Does sound like the bottoming out of the shocks is nothing new though, which is disturbing why Harley would let it continue as is....

Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hey FastHarley, You mention that we'll never have good suspension with the stock HD front forks. So, what do we do to rectify the problem of bottoming?

Install a Race Tech kit and fine tune it.

Take a look at the link in his signature line. He offers a kit to help with that, but for me it's the problem of getting my stuff to him to do the work, or to find someone here who feels comfortable doing the work. I'm definitely going to look around and see, as it does sound promising...
