I like buying used to reduce the initial depreciation. I bought a 06 Ultra a year ago with 5000 miles for only $15,900. At the time it had about $2000 in accessories. So $17,000 for the one you are looking at is way too much. Buy a low mileage used one and put the extra money in to chrome and an extended warranty so it has coverage like new.

There are some good deals on used bikes that some unfortunate guys due to the economy have to unload. I also bought a 2006 Street Bob with 5000 miles on it last fall. It had $6000 worth of accessories on it and I got it for $9000.

I would lean toward used, but agree with everyone else. I bought my '07 new old stock for $2k off msrp. I know the old timer thinks 1 thing but reality is another. I would offer 11.5 to 12. New on the other hand I would go in with the idea of getting a deal. Right now you, as a consumer, is in the driver's seat. Just wait. I would go to the dealer and make an offer. Not the one you will settle for, but a little lower.

Bottom line, only you know what you can swing for a payment. Did you test ride a '09 if not you may want to to see the diffrenece.

I'll toss in a vote for the "Pre-owned" route. I just found an 06 Electra Glide Classic which is unmolested.. all stock. Price is $13k and I'm picking it up on Saturday. I've bought new.. many times and unless you can get a great deal on the new route, right now the market lends itself to the used bike route. However, as you can see with the lad down the street, people are still shooting for the pie in the sky with price. The guy I am buying from wanted close to $16k. I started at $11k and we worked from there.

I would buy new, The 09 is a much better bike, and will be worth more if you sell it in a few years. New also has a warrantee and theres nothing like new bike smell !!

I would buy used, I find great deals (craigslist) . Ride them for a year or two and then sell it for close to what I paid and move on to the next one. I am getting close to selling my 04' RK and am thinking of trying a 07 - 08 SG for a while. I bought my present 04' RK 2 years ago for $14k and it came with $10k of HD chrome installed on it including a HD exotic paint tins (have all the receipts).
It had 1,100 miles on it, now it has 7k.

I would go with the 09. Look at the new build on the 09's and after it is all said and done you will look back and say I am glad I did. But that is just my thoughts, I am not the one putting down the cash.

Good luck

If you could get him down to where it would be a good deal then I would go used but at $17k no way just buy new.

Are you dealing with these guys. http://www.hdwash.com/
Not Ft Wash, but same owner has All American HD in Hughesville MD also.
Since they are giving me a $1000 gift cert that can be used to buy an extended warranty, or clothes, or upgrades, I doubt they would drop from MSRP, but I have not sat down with them, mano e mano to work out a deal.

The 05 is out of warranty, and doesn't have ABS, but the guy is not hurting for money. In fact, I told him what I found on Kelly Blue Book, he said that $15K was for bikes with high mileage. Then I asked him what he wanted for it and $17K was his response. I said I liked the $15K mark better, and that it was January and he would not be getting a lot of lookers in January. He said he would wait until Apr/May and advertise it. He is confident someone will buy it at $17K. I would ****** it at $15, but not $17.

The other side is that I would then have to sell my 06 Deuce on my own, whereas if I bought the 09, I could trade my Deuce in, and that makes my negotiations better since they can resell my 06 Deuce for a profit.

Up here in PA at the local dealer "CLASSIC'S" they have select 08's for $3,000 off. They are a MSRP dealer , give them a call. It may be worth your while. I think your nieghbor is a wishfull seller and wont make that kinda money on that bike.
Its more of a buyers market than a sellers market right now.
