Please correct me if I'm mistaken but they did correct this issue with the '07 engine did they not. I had gear drive installed in my '03 this past summer @ 45,000miles and do not want to drop that kinda money again.
The new ones are a hydraulic cam tensioner and they are made from a nylon instead of the brown composit material your seeing in the pic's others posted. The belief is the nylon will last longer and its tension is controled by the hyd oil psi instead of a spring and they i believe are little bigger and that the contact areas were smoothed more i think so life expectancy and the early issues should be resolved is the moco's thought i guess. I got a buddy has the early set up and hes were shot at 40k he put gear drive in and high flow oil pump hes very happy. Mine is an 07 Dyna so hopefully i won't have an issue.
Mine were still in good shape at 58,000 miles, but I had already bought all the parts to change it over. 84,000 now and no problems with my gear drives.
The type of oil you use also determines shoe life. My first set I replaced at 40K and they were quite scorned, 1/2 the miles run on dino oil before changing to syn. Replaced the next set at 32K (only syn oil used) and hardly scorned and had at least 20K life left in them. Service tech says shoes that see only syn oil have been lasting longer.
Replaced mine @ 22,500 miles and they were fine, but I'm not gonna push the issue. Gonna replace em at 20,000 consistently. Would like to go gear drive but the bike has SE cams in it and feel bad ditching those.
I have a '99 that had the cam bearing problem and it repaired by the stealer.
I called the stealer and he said that they purge their maintanence records after 4 years. Of course my was repaired in 2003, however he said that at that time, the cam bearing repair kit from the factory included new cam tensioner pads.
