I tried! I took the stock mirrors off my FLHT and put on some Arlen Ness softbend stem,small ovals that I had lying around in the garage. They were about as much use as **** on a bull.
I've just fitted some plain round H-D mirrors so now at least I can see behind although these have flat glass, not convex like stock.
I think Kuryakyn do their custom mirrors with either flat or convex.Definately worth going for the convex IMO.

I went through the custom mirror thing, smaller, oval, round, billet....Scrapped em all and traded here online for some new Ultra mirrors that a guy took off to do the same thing. I sent him a new HD T-shirt. One of the best moves I've made. When it comes to mirrors, practicality is important. In other words, function over form, instead of the other way around.

I could'nt agree more!! I tried a few differant 'low profile' mirrors on my bike and have resolved to the fact that safety over looks is priority when it comes to mirrors. I ended up going with the screaming eagle mirrors off of the 08' deuce. Sorta' the 'teardrop' look I wanted...plus, and more importantly IMO, a good field of view from behind.
I have an assortment of mirrors that I have tried in perfect condition and would part with for the price of shipping BTW.
I would like to have some better looking than stock mirrors, and the stock ones don't give me enough view and too much shoulder, so I purchased Hd's stock mirrors with long stems. Functionality is more important than looks when safety is involved.
