It's a long way from Sioux City to Custer. We drove it last year in I-90, and I'd do it again if I had to go that way. No matter which route you take, there ain't much there but pretty landscape and lots of it. I'd take the fastest route possible if it was me, as most of what you want to see will be on the Western part of the state. Be sure you ride through the Badlands starting at Wall, SD. Custer State Park is awesome, as is the rest of the area around Rapid City. Since you are going to Wyoming, be sure you take the detour to Devil's Tower, too. Pretty spectacular. Also, if you have time, take the Spearfish Canyon ride. Dang, I've got to go back this coming Summer!
By the way, when we came back we rode south to Nebraska and came back that way. I won't make that mistake again -- scenery is nothing special except maybe around Scott's Bluff -- I'd have been better to keep going south to Kansas and coming back through the Flint Hills. Sorry, Nebraskans. Kansas is nothing special either, and I live there!
