I'm tired of the ham can look and want to change to an open element look. Anyone use a K&N 0800 without the ham can. Thinking of doing this and dressing up the face of it with a air cleaner insert mounted right on the filter. Any thing i should be concerned about other that a heavy rain?
Been running them like that for years. No problems in the rain either and I've seen plenty of it. Done it to baggers, Superglides and a Heritage. Works great.
This has been covered to death many times, do a search.
That said, there isn't too much to worry about. I've run open air filters (SE and Arlen Ness brands) on all my Harley's since about 2003, and never had a problem. Granted, it doesn't rain too often in Arizona, but when it does, it's not fun! I've been out in the rain with the open filter, and haven't had one hiccup.

If you are so bothered by this question why answer at all? I use the HD 0800 on my 08UC but with the smooth round cover.
Ive been runnin one on my 80 FLT since about 88-89 with no issue's and in real heavy rain I just tuck my leg in front of it......Just put one on my 06 deluxe too......I kept the full cover on my 01 but that will more then likely change this yr too.
