I use Cobra's handheld CB mounted on my saddlebag guard while riding where i need a CB, when i don't, it just pops off and i dont' have to worry about it on the handlebars, etc. Also, its not uncommon for us to use them during crowd control or staging bikes for larger rides etc. This is the unit that i have along with a heatset/mic.
Check-out Sierra Electronics' website. They sell kits that include a handheld CB, handlebar mount, push to talk button, mic and helmet speakers. Cost is about $200.
J&M is a superior solution, but will run close to $500 by the time you buy what you need.
J&M has two units. One is CB only and the other is CB+Intercomm. So it depends on whether you are riding solo or 2 up. If 2up do you want intercomm.
We got the cb only unit for my wifes Heritage and it seems to work really well. I went with the HD factory unit for my roadglide since I already had the control switches on the bike and the factory unit is a cleaner looking finish. If I had a bike without a fairing I would have went with the J&M unit + intercom.
The installed price we paid for the J&M was about 750.00 and then we added on a new helmet and out the door was just over $900.00. I think it was 3 hours labor charge in that price.
I use a motocomm st1 setup with a cobra handheld radio. It is the best bang for the buck and comes with 2 headsets for open 3/4 and full face helmets. Does intercomm MP3 input and works good at around 80MPH
