Default Transmission side cover question

Ok...here's the deal. I have a '97 Road King and I'm looking to replace the transmission side cover. The parts catalogs list different part numbers for the '87-'98 bikes and the '99-'06 bikes. From every picture I can see, everything (other than the fact that the older covers are ribbed) looks to be the same. Can anyone either confirm or deny that the covers are interchangeable? And please don't comment based solely on the fact that they are different part numbers. I need to know from someone who has tried it. Thanks in advance.

Yes the new style smooth side covers on the 5 speed will replace your Ribbed cover. I know this first hand because I had to go the other way.

Here's my story, Arlen Ness used to make a Flamed Cover that fit nicely over the ribbed style side cover. When Harley changed to the smooth style cover the Arlen Ness item no longer worked so Arlen Ness discontinued it. Well I just happened to find a brand new still in the package Flamed Cover. So I went to my local Harley dealer and bought a brand new Ribbed style side cover just so I could use the Flamed cover to match all my other Flamed items. It bolts on using all the same components, you don't have to buy anything other than a new Side Cover Gasket and O-Ring for the Clutch Cable.

Hope this helps and answers your question.
