Default Lifter question

I have an 07 RG with 40k on it, and I have heard from 2 reputable wrench's that I should consider changing out the lifters. They both say the lifters start to go bad at about 40k and the needle bearings on the rollers start to come apart. Does anyone else have information regarding the life expectancy of the lifters in a TC96?

You could do 1 of 2 things...

#1..if it aint broke, dont fix it
#2..have better security knowing they wont go out soon and strand you because you installed new

Also, I'd look at the cam tensioners, too.

Cam tensioners "should" be ok since you have the updated '07 roller chain/hydraulic tensioner system but you will be able to see them when you pull the cam cover. Lifters are an easy job to do. Get the SE Adjustable pushrods so you don't have to pull the gas tank and rocker box covers. I kind of agree with BPig though... If it ain't broke...

If I were going into the motor, I would replace the lifters. If I weren't working on it, I would let the lifters ride. The lifters are the same ones that a small block Chevy uses. They certainly don't fall apart in a Chevy in 40k miles.

True, though. When I did my cam swap, I use Crane lifters. A call to Crane confirmed that their HD and Chevy lifters are the exact same part with different part numbers. The difference is that the Chevy numbered ones cost quite a bit less. The Chevy part number is 10530. I ordered a V8 set (16) from Summit for 200 bucks delivered. I put 4 in my bike and sold the other 3 sets for 50 bucks per 4. Four of us ended up with new lifters for 50 bucks each.

Thanks. I'm with you guys,if it ain't broke.... My concern was I would hate to be on my 10 day summer ride rolling on the miles and get stuck in BFE with a bad lifter. It seems to me with the technology lifters would go at least 75-100k.

This sounds more like the well documented lifter and inner cam bearing issues with the post-'92 EVO motors. I haven't heard anything about this with the later model twinkies.

Interesting and informative info on the Chevy lifter thang.

Y'all ride safe,

John

The only documented lifter issues I've heard about lately for the TC motors was related to the SE "high performance" lifters failing. I think the standards that came in the engines are good to go.
