Is this normal...service dept. said my rear brakes are gone and I need rear brake pads. Wow...this is a shocker. I do not ride the brake and my riding style is normal. Could it be the fact that turning and maneuvering in the friction zone causes extreme ware on the rear brake?
If your talking an 08 or 09, yes I can understand the brakes being gone. Harley saw fit to reduce the lining to about 1/2 of what was on previous years, they say because of the brembo braking system, sounded like a good marketing move as pads are now listed at around $42.00. There is probably some vaildity to the friction zone theory too.
I have replaced my rear pads twice (07 FLHT with 14K) and I would attribute it to my riding style. I ride the friction zone often at every light and every chance I get. The pads are about the same price as your paying. I wouldnt sweat it. It is cheap and easy to do yourself. It takes about 2 beers to get it done.
I'd say it abnormal. 17,000 and my brakes are not even half worn. Yes once in a while hard when I had to get on the binders.
Of course you'll get 2000 differant answers here.
I use front to slow down most of the time "gently" then rear when needed.
Some days all rear, some days all front
Also braking depends if solo or 2 up..
All stock brake system here...no mods
This ought to be interesting
I've got 20,000 on my brakes and they still have some meat left. I do use the friction zone a lot and ride the rear brake, but I don't go nuts with it. Most of my riding is two-up also. If I were you, I would eyeball the pads myself.
Normal for who? I think it depends on your driving habits, highway, in town etc. I use to replace rear pads at 8-9000 miles. I have since changed my braking habit and apply more pressure to front brakes than rear. I have 18,000 on front and rear pads, rear pads were checked at 14,000 and looked fine.
I posted something similar about my rear rotor turning yellow(overheated) and brake squeal and no one responded except that I don't know how to use my brakes properly(I do). I also am seeing in another post on here about a reflash for the ABS, could all this be related? I have the ABS system also!
