I did not notice any increased vibrations or noise with mine --- 09 FLHR I would take it back!

My 09 Ultra 103 with 255's doesn't vibrate while riding but the motor does seem to shake the bike more at idle. I to have noticed the increase in noise from the air cleaner when you snap the throttle.

What pipes are you running? Mine (Rinehart TD's) crack pretty good at WOT but sound sedate when I feather the twist grip. Vibration has been a bit more noticeable lately, but this bike has 30K miles already. I was also wondering how to check the front motor mount, besides torque wrench...

Hi Todd,
The increased noise you noticed, is this comparing it to the stock air cleaner or did you have the SE air cleaner before the 103" was installed? In my case I installed the Stage I first and that air cleaner is definitely louder than the stock one. When I installed the 103" Stage II including 255 cams is when I noticed the popping sound. Do you hear a popping sound when you gas it? This sound starts at about 2200 rpm or so and eventually becomes more of a roar as the rpms increase.

Also, do you notice any buzzing from the floor boards when riding?

Thanks,
Marc

I'm running the stock exhaust. The noise I'm referring to seems to be coming from the intake.

Could this sound be knocking or pinging? Maybe from a bad tune?

I've never heard either as far as I know and am not really sure what it would sound like.

The popping is probably the cams. They have pretty sharp ramps so the valves are opening much faster and closing much faster. A good cam will always let you know it's doing its job.

The vibration may be a balance issue. Was the crank runout measured before the cams were installed? Are the cams gear drive? Sometimes the rubber in the motor mounts break down and the engine slips onto the frame and that can cause really bad vibration that will have differing amounts at different RPMs. You can look @ the motor mounts to see if there is any metal to metal contact going on.

When you say the popping is probably the cams I'm not sure what you mean. You don't mean that they are causing a mechanical noise do you? I think you're saying that the change in timing and lift has changed the combustion process in a way that causes the popping noise from the intake. Is that right? If so, it makes sense to me. I'd like to hear another one just to see if its the same.

The crank runout was not checked. This is an '09 bike so however the OE cams are driven is how this one is. The only difference is the grind. This being a new bike with only < 4K miles on it so the mounts shouldn't be worn out yet. I'd like to check the mounts and see if there is anything wrong. Can you tell me what to look for?

Thanks for the help,
Marc

With an '09 you should consult you service manual and it should give you proper values. Did it shake before you had the 103" in? If it was after, maybe the tech did not do something to mounts corectly. Seeing it is a new system of mounting I would suspect that might be the case. I did look at an '09 and see there might be a new procudeure, but the manual would give you a better indication.
