Just wondering how many people on here stoped moding for better performance with the stage 1?
Reason I ask, I have no idea what has been done to my bike, accept I know it has had a stage 1 upgrade, had it in to the guy that works on it, he made the statement that it has the air cleaner, most guys don't stop there.
Thanks
Terry
I ran the Stage 1 and SE/AC for five years on my '04 Road King but always suspected it was running lean. This year, I installed a PC V from
Fuel moto with their map. The motor runs sounds and runs much better, almost like I installed a mild cam. My Tachometer should arrive this week. That will help me decide which cam I DO want to install with my 95"/ street port build this winter.
I have done the stage 1 on three of my Sportsters. A XL1200L Low Sportster and two XL883 Sportsters. I like the way they perform now much better than they did before. I already bought a 1250 kit for one of the XL883 Sportsters but so far I have been happy with everything just the way it is and I have not installed the 1250 kit as yet. I am just waiting for the right time to do it though as I kind of like Hot-Rodding around when I can get away with it.
I don't believe there is a clear definition of 'stage 1', or the other stages people talk about. The main thing about it is it only involves fairly simple things we can bolt on.
Harleys for 20 years or more have suffered from factory fitted parts that limit performance. They don't have any choice, as they have to meet noise and exhaust emission laws. So when new our bikes had quiet restrictive air boxes, lean-burn carbs or EFI, quiet mufflers and poor ignition timing.
So IMHO a stage 1 should include a new airbox such as SE to improve engine breathing, new mufflers or complete exhaust to help breathing, rejetting/resetting of the carb/EFI to give optimum air/fuel ratio and a new ignition module to give a better timing advance curve. I would add a new cam, which is easily fitted, to complete the upgrade.
Having done all that and more I eventually threw it away and fitted an S&S 107! So no, I didn't stop at 'stage 1'.
