Riding home this evening my 1998 Electra Gluide 1340 EFI Evo quit running, it first stalled and then restarted, but stalled again within a mile. It was raining at the time. Crank but no start, I could hear the fuel pump running so I dont think it was the pump. By the time the tow truck got there it started, but I had them tow it home to be safe. Got home and removed the points cover to see if maybe water got inside the cam / crank sensor. There was no water and no sign of it getting wet. Started up no problem and no codes. When I tried to start before when I turned the key on, the check engine light did come on, so I know the ECM was powering up. Anyone know or have any Ideas as to why it might have quit running in the rain.
How old is your battery? I had a similar situation a couple of years back that was caused by an old battery. My bike died. I started it up and ran it for a while until it died again. It continued to run for shorter periods of time until it would no longer start. It wasn't raining that day, but I did have to call a tow truck.
It could have overheated or the "wet" bit may have dried out by the time you got back. Try to start your bike and let it run for about as long as you were riding last, if it doesn't then try washing your bike with the engine running taking note of where you're getting it wet. Crude way but I guess the only way since there's no error codes.
sorry you needed tow.
do you think it is related to rain/wet ?
or
could coil be taking a dump? are coil and wires original ?
other rule-outs:
1-junk in the fuel tank
2-i see you checked cam position sensor..no melting?...this sensor WILL make for a very difficult start..but you usually get a few bad starts warning.
3-everything tight on electrical system? battery?, fuses?
4-got a digital voltage meter? check battery voltage and charging..
5-anything electrical added ?
