Default Adjusting Shock Pressure

I carry about 25# of pressure when by myself & no load. Leaning on the Jiffy Stand I measure around 12.5" from floor to the lowest point of the rear fender.

I loaded my gear bags on the bike (about 70# on the passenger seat and rear rack), and rechecked. Shocks showed about 24# pressure and still 12.5". Odd because visually it looked low, what I would expect to see. I put the bike on the Wheeldock and it looked low.

Pumped the shocks up to 45# for testing and re-measured all. On the WD the fender was 13.75", exactly what it was without the load and at 25#. Of course this doesn't mean much as the WD probably skews results. Back down on the Jiffy Stand and at 45#, the fender was 12.5" floor to fender.

Weird! I thought the load would lower the rear end. Apparentley not though it sure looked like it visually! When the ride comes I'll probably run 35# with that load.

Thoughts?

Hmmm...I run 10 psi when one up and it's smooth as silk, with the wife I run about 25 and it's all good.

theres a big differace in air pressure for 09s and pre 09s.They have differant suspensions. My 07 I would run 15lbs for the same ride I use 30 lbs

Doug, don't forget to take the pump with you, so you can make adjustment. I have been running about 30lbs solo and I weigh 235lbs. With a load on back I might increase about 5 to 10 lbs.. Experience will tell..

That little shock pump is a good thing, definitely on the 'checklist' for taking on trips.

Collerville HD told me to run 25# solo, maybe 35# with the 70# gear load. They said if I were 2 up and the gear load, go to 40#+. So my feeble mind's thinking the purpose of increasing the shock pressure is (in so many words) to keep the rear fender off the road.

I'll look at the touring manual and check with HD again. I know 70# of gear is far less than a 2 up load but I did expect to see some sort of rear end down. And visually it sure looked like it was but the tape said otherwise.

oscarg, tkx for that point! More reason to ask HD about all this. Can't hurt.
