It only changes the location of the connection. What item are you having volum issues with? IPOD, GPS?
With my Zumo 550, with the volume turned up all the way on both the GPS & the HD Stereo, you can barely hear either directions or MP3s, if at all... I know this has been posted about many times, I thought (hoped) maybe more of a hard-wired connection might take some of the play out of the connection and result in better audio...
I wouldn't do this mod... You can sell that H/K radio for $400-$500 pretty easily on eBay... Get rid of it, put an Alpine in with the hand control converter from Pacific Audio or get one of Wayne's setups when they come out.. You will still be ahead cash wise and be rid of that junkie head unit...
Then you can easily hook up an amp, control an ipod, whatever you want...

did you turn the master volume up on the 550, lower left button

Zumo has two volume settings,
#1 is accessed by "Wrench", "Volume". this is the percentage of the master volume setting for the Nav or MP3 sound.
#2 is accessed only while powered by the bike, by pressing the left rubber "Volume" (bottom) button. This is the MASTER VOLUME setting. Set it to MAX.
I'm using the Nuvi 660, It has a MP3 player built in so I only have the one item on the bars. Volume is great through the Aux jack. I'll be doing this mod soon.

Thanks, yeah I've turned everything to max and it is still hard to hear while riding... I'm a techie guy, not afraid to go through menus & stuff, and the volume is still pretty weak, nothing compared to the volume you get from a CD or the radio.
Thats really suprising to me, usually i have to lower the main volume for the Zumo, and then lower the MP3 audio level even lower if i have the radio volume all the way up. Otherwise i get distortion. Mine is certainly plenty loud, and REALLY loud when i turn the bike off!

3.5mm stereo jacks can also be temperemental sometimes, may even be a dry solder joint or something. For fear of stating the obvious:
1. You get stereo and mono 3.5mm jacks, is the correct jack fitted (count number of black rings on jack)
2. I am not sure the HD audio system can do this (I use the headset not speakers) but if you set FADE to either front or back, and BALANCE to left or right, then turn volume up, only one speaker should work, then by adjusting those 2 settings you can play through just one speaker at a time.
Shouldn't be a big difference between each speaker, and also should be similar level to CD or radio. If one or 2 speakers dodgy, then check if they OK with CD, and if so then change the connection cable from the SatNav
